How American odds work

American odds are quoted as a positive or negative number. Positive odds (e.g. +150) tell you how much you win on a $100 stake — a $100 bet on +150 returns $150 in profit, plus your $100 back. Negative odds (e.g. -200) tell you how much you need to risk to win $100 — you stake $200 to win $100. Books quote both sides of every market with built-in vig (the “juice”) so the implied probabilities sum to slightly more than 100% — that spread is the house's edge.

How parlay payouts multiply

A parlay is a single bet that combines multiple legs. Every leg must win or the whole bet loses. The combined payout is the product of each leg's decimal odds. Two even-money legs (+100 each) produce a 4x payout (2.0 × 2.0 = 4.0). Five legs at standard -110 juice multiply to roughly 25x. The math grows fast — but so does the variance: a five-leg parlay at -110 each has only a ~16% chance to hit even if every leg is a coin flip.

Sizing bets responsibly

Stake size matters more than odds picking. The disciplined default is flat sizing: 1–2% of your bankroll per straight bet, with a smaller allocation reserved for parlays (which carry higher variance). A stake unit (1u) is whatever percentage of your bankroll you decide on up front and stick with — varying stake size based on conviction (“I really feel this one”) is the most common way casual bettors blow up their bankroll. Every SSI pick ships with a recommended unit size based on quarter-Kelly sizing, so you're never guessing how big to bet.
